In this annual report, we reflect on the remarkable evolution of the Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) since its inception in 1987. From its beginnings with a small community cohort study in a modest rented space, RHSP has grown into a leading research institution, now anchored by the newly completed Rakai Health Sciences Center. This state-of-the-art facility, equipped with advanced laboratories and clinical resources, symbolizes the program's significant progress.

The report highlights the crucial role of our key supporters, including the Uganda Virus Research Institute, Rakai Town Council, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, US National Institutes of Health, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Their vital support has enabled RHSP to expand its research and service capabilities, driving forward comprehensive studies and health interventions.

We also emphasize the invaluable contributions of the Rakai District’s population and leadership. Their ongoing engagement and commitment have provided essential data and insights, benefiting not only Uganda but also the broader global community. The report underscores our dedication to ethical research practices and the respectful collaboration with study participants.

Looking ahead, RHSP remains focused on advancing clinical and basic science research to deepen our understanding of HIV and related health issues. The introduction of antiretroviral therapy and continued research will be pivotal in assessing the health, epidemiological, and social impacts of these interventions. With the continued support of our partners and community, we are poised to continue making a significant impact in global health for years to come.
