Dr. Tom Lutalo
Uganda Virus Research Institute - UVRI
For over 30 years, Dr. Tom’s career as a Data Manager and Medical Statistician with the program resulted in extensive experience and a prolific record of contributions to various research endeavors.
In his former capacity, as the head of the Data and Biostatistics department (till 2023), he assumed a pivotal role in guiding and supervising critical aspects of data management, including collection, analysis, storage, and utilization.
His expertise and leadership are instrumental in ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of statistical methodologies employed across research initiatives. He has served as a PI/Co-Investigator on RHSP studies with funding from NIH, BMGF and Welcome Trust.
He plays a leading role in the promotion of collaborative reproductive health studies, promoting the four pillars of autonomy, control, respect and systems support. His contribution has led to several Masters and PhDs among both national and international students, especially from Makerere, Columbia and Johns Hopkins Universities.
At the National level, he plays a leading role to partner RHSP with Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) where he is an Assistant Director of Research. He has overseen data collection, management and analysis of studies that include Evaluation of the pMTCT program in Uganda, Evaluating new HIV and COVID-19 diagnostic kits, HIV drug resistance, mortality due to HIV and Early Warning Indicator surveys.
Dr. Tom continues to promote
scientific discovery and the nurturing of individuals in their areas of
interest.
